8th Asean Festival Report

The 8th ASEAN Festival- An event held jointly by members comprising of 10 ASEAN countries and this year, Malaysia Students’ Association in Japan (MSAJ) was chosen as the Head Event Manager.

The event’s objective is to provide a platform for cultural exchange between Japan and other South East Asia countries in order to strengthen international relations and to foster friendship. Along with the 40th Year Anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, we were targeting a larger event scale compared to last year.

This year, it was held on 20th July 2013 (Saturday) at Hollywood School of Beauty and Fashion, Roppongi Hills which was the same as last year’s.

Basically, ASEAN Festival shows every country’s presentation (Instead of having the usual slideshow presentation for country introduction, this year we changed it to a video style presentation), booth for each country (selling local delicacies and promoting their own country), cultural performances and fashion show.

In this ASEAN Festival edition, we, the Malaysian Team was fortunate enough to collaborate with Japan-Malaysia Association led by Mr.Arai Takuji and Tourism Malaysia In Japan. Mr.Arai Takuji acted as our performance conductor, teaching us the Sapeh & Bird dance and Tarian 1 Malaysia while Tourism Malaysia lent us all the clothes and props needed for the Cultural Performance and Fashion Show.

In a nutshell, ASEAN Festival was an eye-opener to visitors as they were able to experience the varieties of culture from ASEAN countries. The best part was experiencing the performances done by ASEAN students who are studying in Japan first-hand.

MSAJ Welcome Party 2013 Report

On the 14 of April (Saturday), MSAJ collaborated with Kelab UMNO Jepun (KUJ) in organizing a Welcome Party at Yoyogi Park, Tokyo. The event served as a platform for new students who have just arrived to Japan recently to make acquaintances besides promoting MSAJ’s activities to them. Unfortunately, the sakura blooming season was coming to an end by the time the event was held. Nevertheless, the event went smoothly as picnic with games and prizes was participated by a lively and vibrant crowd that was gathered under the radiant Tokyo sunshine.

In the presence of around 50 people, the event started at 10am with speeches given by both the President of MSAJ and KUJ respectively, followed by the tradition of the cake cutting ceremony. The main menu served was nasi ayam (chicken rice) with desserts and snacks to go along with. This event served as an ice breaker not only to the participants but for the organizer as well as it was the first event organized together with the new committee members.

This event was filled with loads of activities with the main activity being the treasure hunt that was fascinating as the participants were given interesting tasks such as taking pictures with a Japanese family. Other than that, there was also a lucky draw event that offered 15 lucrative prizes for grabs. The participants also took part in games such as football and Frisbee.

The party ended at 3:30pm. We packed everything and bid farewell to each other but we know that we will meet again. This year’s welcome party wasn’t as successful as last year’s but it fulfilled its purpose as a platform for the new students to get to know each other. A suggestion for next year would be to hold this event during the cherry blossom peak season.

MSAJ x UNISC visit to the Embassy of Malaysia

Date: 7 June 2013 (Fri)
Time: 3pm – 5pm
Attended by 10 students (Malaysian & Japanese).

Hosted by Tuan Syed Farizal Aminy, the counsellor of embassy.

This visit was originally proposed by Izawa Souichiro of UNISC when we first met earlier this year. After a delay and several rounds of contact with the the embassy, we were finally given the green light to proceed with the visit.

In total, 12 students had registered but eventually 10 students attended. For the participants, I was the only Malaysian and the rest were Japanese students from various universities, mostly from UNISC.

Our session was hosted by the counsellor of embassy, Encik Syed Farizal Aminy. The session was conducted mostly in English and En Syed Farizal started with a brief history of the independence of Malaysia to let the Japanese participants understand better before proceeding with further questions.

Among the topics discussed were:
– British’s influence to the administration of Malaysia
– Malaysia’s rotating monarchy system
– Relationship between Malaysia with neighborhood countries
– What can Japan learn from SEA countries to deal with territorial problem
– Effects of Japan joining TPP
– Influence of USA to the Japanese government

It was an informative session as we discussed the issues, as En Syed Farizal managed to explain difficult topics in a relatively easy manner, making it easier to understand. As himself studied in Japan before, his familiarity of Japan definitely helped to make relevant comparison between Malaysia & Japan.

We would like to thank En Syed Farizal for his valuable insights that helped us to understand Malaysia better.
