【Bulletin】Yokohama Brothers & Sisters Program

For the first time ever, MSAJ held a collaboration event called “Yokohama Brothers & Sisters Program” with Yamato-Nishi Senior High School, a traditional Japan high school located in Kanagawa Prefectural.

The event is a new type of volunteer program where the volunteers (Malaysian students) spend their time together with the high school students walking around places in Yokohama in order to make them feel comfortable communicating with foreigners (Malaysian) in English before going for a school trip to Malaysia in October 2014.

Although the program started early in the morning at 9:00AM, all the participants gave their full cooperation by coming early to the meeting point, Yokohama Park, without being late. After a little briefing from the school teacher, the volunteers were separated to 24 groups of students. Each groups consists of 5~7 Yamato-Nishi students and 1 Malaysian student. All the groups then started their trip according to the route that they have planned before. Among the places visited were Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, Yokohama Cosmo World, China Town, and CupNoodles Museum.

The morning session ended at around 12:00PM and the volunteers had some rest and lunch at JICA Yokohama. At around 1:30PM, the evening session started and once again, the volunteers were divided into smaller groups with the students and they went around Yokohama again but with different course. The evening session ended around 3:30PM and all the volunteers and students gathered at Yokohama Park before being dismissed.

It was an interesting and memorable event for both volunteers and the students. Despite the age gap between them, they were able to mingle and chat friendly. The school also hoped to have the same event next year.

Prepared by,
Vice President

【Volunteer】 International English Autumn & Winter Camp

main01

Interested in volunteering, communicating in English and have a great time together with cute little kids by camping with them?

Details about this volunteer project is as below:
Hello! This is Recovery Assistance Center of Miyagi, which keeps committing on the relief works with Miyagi prefecture and Sendai city. One of our projects, “International English Camp” is designed to increase the mental welfare of the children.

A lot of children got a scar in their hearts through the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011. Some children lost their family members or their friends, some lost their house to live, and some just could not forget what they experienced on the horrific day…The project has started in inviting the children who still lived in the temporary housings to Zao, a tourist spot in Miyagi in summer 2012. In spring 2013, we have held the camps in Chichibu, Saitama for the children evacuated from the three prefectures affected by the disaster.

This camp is designed for the cheerful, positive, and communicative foreign students, foreigners and the children to spend time together so that the children will get back their smiles and cheerfulness, increasing their cooperativeness, activeness, independence, and the sense of internationalism.

We have been committed to invite all the children who have been affected by the disaster at least once, and it would be highly appreciated if you could help our project.

MSAJ Tohoku Volunteer Trip 2012

MSAJ will be organising a volunteer trip to Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture on 6th-7th October (depart on 5th Oct, Friday night, return on 8th Oct, Monday morning approx 6 am).

First of all, we would like to thank Singapore Students’ Association in Japan (SSAJ) for providing the required information and allowing us to use the materials of their own volunteer trip back in June 2012. It was a very meaningful trip and the EXCO of Malaysian Students’ Association in Japan (MSAJ) has decided to organize a similar one to create a platform for Malaysians in Japan, to provide continuing support to disaster-stricken town of Otsuchi.

Participation is open to ALL Malaysians in Japan, however, students will be prioritized if number of registered participants exceeds the limit. The cost of participation is as followed, which includes bus transport, accommodation, food and volunteer insurance.

  1.  MSAJ Member           →   JPY 10,000
  2.  Non-MSAJ Member  →   JPY 12,000

**The final confirmed cost would be updated later

The core organising team for this project is made up of the EXCO of MSAJ and a few of us have had experiences volunteering in Otsuchi with SSAJ back in June 2012.

Common fears:

  • Volunteering in these places might not be safe due to earthquake/tsunami
  • Worries about radiation
  • Unsure of where to start (Let MSAJ lead you)

For answers to these questions, please refer to our FAQ

Now, we are taking away these worries and providing you with a platform to volunteer. We think this project is necessary because the enthusiasm for volunteering in Tohoku has tapered off and reconstruction has been relatively slow in Otsuchi. There is a critical need to engage and retain young volunteers. The recovery effort includes, but is not limited to, cleaning up beaches and rivers, in the hope that these places will be safe for tourists, and that the tourism industry can restart as soon as possible.

Registration will close once we reach 40 participants (inclusive of organizing committee members) or on 31st August 2012 Friday, 2359 hours, whichever is earlier.
